How is the steel of the splitting axe forged?

Gränsfors Bruk's tools are made from a special alloy of recycled high-carbon steel. The steel is heated to around 1200 °C and then worked by a blacksmith in a press with 80 blows per minute and a force of 180 tons. This repeated processing changes the structure of the steel, creating a thinner, but still sharp and durable cutting edge. Finally, the blacksmith stamps his initials into the axe head, symbolizing the high quality and human craftsmanship behind each axe.

High-quality handle made of hickory wood

The handle of the splitting axe is made of hickory wood. This stands for durability and a high density in order to be able to withstand even larger impacts. After the axe has been sharpened in production, the handle is inserted. The handle is pressed firmly into the axe head using a press. To ensure a permanent and secure connection, a wooden wedge is finally driven into the shaft. This wedge ensures that the handle remains firmly anchored and does not loosen even with intensive use such as frequent wood splitting. The surface is treated with beeswax to withstand water and dirt.

What should be considered when caring for the axe

If you look after your splitting axe carefully, it will last a lifetime and can even be passed on to the next generation. To ensure the longevity of the axe, you should always store it in a dry place. If it is not to be used for a long time, it is advisable to treat the metal with cooking or gun oil, such as Ballistol.
