The powerful

The Epona 380 is an axe from Iconic Tools in close collaboration with our local toolsmith Mirko Günther . All manufacturing steps, from forging to slicing, are carried out entirely by hand. The axe is a small, powerful all-round axe and at the same time a precision tool and is ideal for delimbing trees and chopping firewood.

The axe handle is made of hickory, a low-fiber wood. The long fibers make the wood both strong and flexible. The handle is untreated and works best with a protective layer of linseed oil or beeswax.

Each Epona axe comes with a hand-stitched blade guard made of chrome-free tanned leather.

EPONA-380 von Mirko Günther

Traditional craftsmanship: How hand-forged axes are made by Mirko Günther

Mirko Günther is one of the few blacksmiths in Germany who still has a perfect command of traditional free-form forging. In his hammer forge in Saxony, he makes axes according to old traditions - without any modern machines. The production is done by hand and gives each axe its unmistakable uniqueness. This traditional technique leads to an exceptional longevity and quality that is rarely found in machine-made tools. Mirko's passion for his craft makes his hand-forged axes valuable companions for both professionals and collectors, which not only work but also inspire.

From raw steel to the finished axe: The intensive forging process in Mirko's workshop

In Mirko's hammer forge, glowing raw steel is transformed into a high-quality, hand-forged axe by many hammer blows. The steel is heated to 1200 degrees and shaped in several steps. The air hammer plays a central role and provides the necessary force to bring the steel into the desired shape. Every hammer blow and every heating phase are crucial for the quality of the finished axe. But the process does not end here: grinding, hardening and the final polish on the wooden handle follow until the axe is finished. A manual process that requires patience and specialist knowledge.

Why free-form forging makes hand-forged axes by Mirko Günther unique

Mirko Günther's hand-forged axes are truly unique thanks to the free-form technique. Unlike mass production, each piece of steel is processed individually, which gives the axe exceptional stability and durability. This method makes it possible to perfectly adapt the blade to its later use - be it for splitting wood, carving or chopping. Thanks to the precise handwork, each axe offers incomparable sharpness and balance. For you, this means a tool that is not only more powerful, but also lasts significantly longer and impresses in every respect.

Where does the name Epona come from?

The name "Epona" comes from Celtic mythology and refers to the goddess of horses and protection. This powerful meaning is reflected in the Epona axe, which is handcrafted by Mirko Günther. Like the goddess, this hand-forged axe also stands for strength and reliability. With its compact shape and versatile use, the Epona axe is ideal for outdoor adventures and demanding work such as tree limbing or chopping firewood. This makes the Epona axe your companion in nature.
