The Powerful

Fortis is an axe made by Iconic Tools in close collaboration with our regional toolsmith Mirko Günther . All manufacturing steps, from forging to styling, are carried out entirely by hand. With its flexible and functional properties, it is suitable for a very wide range of uses. The long handle and its ergonomic shape ensure a firm grip and balanced striking power because it is used with two hands.

The medium-weight head not only allows you to split firewood, but also to fell trees. The visible processing marks are traces of the hammer forging process. This so-called scale layer makes each axe unique. Only the blade area is subjected to a blank grind.

The axe handle is made of hickory, a low-fiber wood. The long fibers make the wood both strong and flexible. The handle is untreated and works best with a protective layer of linseed oil or beeswax.

Each Fortis axe comes with a hand-stitched blade guard made of chrome-free tanned leather.

FORTIS800 von Mirko Günther

How Mirko Günther forges axes into unique masterpieces

Mirko Günther is one of the few blacksmiths in Germany who still masters traditional free-form forging. In his hammer forge in Saxony, he makes axes like they did a century ago - without any modern machines. Each hammer blow is done entirely by hand and with the utmost precision, which makes each axe a unique piece of work. This traditional technique gives the tools a remarkable longevity and quality that is rarely found in industrially manufactured products. Mirko's passion for craftsmanship makes his axes valuable companions for both professionals and collectors.

From glowing steel to the finished tool: The complex forging process in Mirko's workshop

In Mirko's hammer forge, glowing raw steel is shaped into a high-quality axe by numerous hammer blows. The steel is heated to 1200 degrees and then shaped in several steps. The air hammer plays a crucial role in this and provides the necessary force to shape the steel. Every blow and every moment of heating is crucial for the final product. But the work does not end there: grinding, hardening and attaching the wooden handle follow until the axe reaches its final shape. A craft process that requires both patience and skill.

Why every axe by Mirko Günther is unique

Mirko Günther's hand-forged axes are unique thanks to the free-form technique. Unlike mass production, each piece of steel is individually formed, which ensures exceptional stability and durability. This method allows the blade to be optimally adapted to its later use - whether for splitting, carving or chopping. The precise handwork means that the sharpness and balance of each axe are unique. For the user, this means a tool that not only works more efficiently, but also has a longer service life.

Axe Fortis: The perfect choice for splitting firewood and felling trees

The Fortis axe is a real powerhouse and ideal for heavy work such as splitting firewood or felling trees. Its medium-weight head ensures an optimal balance between penetrating power and precision, while the long handle enables safe two-handed handling. Hand-forged using free-form technology by Mirko Günther, each axe is unique and stands out due to its unique scale layer. Whether you are a professional or a beginner, the Fortis axe offers you reliable performance and durability for every task.
